h&m band shirts... cool or not!?

today I saw a pretty awesome michael jackson tee at h&m, and I've really wanted a michael jackson tee for years since I'm a big fan.. I didn't buy it though because soon probably half of the school will be wearing the same shirt and that isn't cool, is it!?
the same thing happens all the time: nirvana, the stones, the doors, the clash, jimi hendrix ... I would rate all those among my favourite bands, and I did buy some of the shirts but only in the men's section because not a lot of girls at my school wear men's shirts and the boys don't shop at h&m a lot.
but the girls' shirts - which are awesome, really! - are always worn by half of the girls at my school, often even by like 6 graders who don't even know the mouth with the toung sticking out on their shirts is the logo of a band. this really makes me wish h&m wouldn't even sell these shirts.
that's a luxury problem, I know! but still... what do you think? do you wear the h&m band shirts? I'd love to hear (read!) your opinion on this topic!

TOP 10 BOOK LIST

well, I called this blog coffee, BOOKS and poetry, so I'm going to write a little bit about my favourite books now. It's a damn hard decision and I might be of a different opinion tomorrow, but today and at this moment I'd say my top 10 books are

1. JUST KIDS - PATTI SMITH
2. A LONG WAY DOWN - NICK HORNBY
3. THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY - OSCAR WILDE
4. ON THE ROAD - JACK KEROUAC
5. CARRIE - STEPHEN KING
6. PEACE - ALEXA HENNIG VON LANGE
7. FAST GENIAL - BENEDICT WELLS
8. THE DOWNTOWN DIARIES (FORCED ENTRIES) - JIM CARROLL
9. ONE DAY - DAVID NICHOLLS
10. TWILIGHT - STEPHENIE MEYER

...not necessarily in that order, but I think this is it. I'd recommend all of them to everybody who... just to everybody actually. They're awesome, really.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I first read JUST KIDS in 2010 and I've read it like three or four times since then. I just love it, it's such a beautiful story and really makes me feel like I was born in the wrong time. even though it's basically a biography it's kind of like a novel, maybe even the most beautiful love story I've ever read.
(it's about patti smith and her boyfriend and later friend robert mapplethorpe, by the way, it's mainly set in new york city in the 60s/70s for those who don't know)
I can only recommend this book to everybody who is SLIGHTLY interested in either patti smith, robert mapplethorpe, new york in the 60s/70s, the art scene around andy warhol or anything like that...

from just kids (patti smith)

A LONG WAY DOWN is awesome book too. I love nick hornby in general, all of his books, but I guess this is my favourite. The story (5 people are planning on killing themselves on nye and then accidently meet because they all wanted to jump of the same roof, so they decide to not kill themselves and instead just live a little longer and see what happens) is amazing I think. I also love nick hornby's style of writing and the characters in the story. if you like nick hornby, you'll probably like david nicholls too. of course you don't have to like nick hornby for liking david nicholls, I've recommended ONE DAY to several people and they all loved it. no matter if boy or girl and which age, everybody loved it, and I think that speaks for itself.

THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY is a beautiful story with a great moral (although I'm not sure whether to believe in morals or not, most of the time people notice they're true and realize their mistakes but don't change anything anyway...). still. this is a beautiful story with a moral. read it.

I already told you that I love jack kerouac. ON THE ROAD is probably my favourite among his books, it's a difficult decision though. I just love the way kerouac describes the places he travels and the things he sees. he writes about a different america, an america that I don't think really exists anymore, so the book - just like JUST KIDS - makes me feel like I was born in the wrong time.

CARRIE is my favourite by stephen king, and I have read A LOT of stephen king books! he's an awesome author, this is an awesome book. this post is getting too long so I won't write that much about every single book...

PEACE and FAST GENIAL are german books and I don't think there are english translations, but I really do recommend them to everybody who speaks german!

THE DOWNTOWN DIARIES (FORCES ENTRIES), just like jim carrolls first diary 'the basketball diaries' (you should see the film with leonardo dicaprio, it's epic!) is an awesome book, which is also set in new york city in the 60s/70s.

yeah, I know, most of you will think I'm so stupid for liking TWILIGHT. but I do. I'd even say I love it. I first read it when I was in canada in 2008 and from then on loved everything to do with vampires and washington state. I'm not that vampire-crazy anymore but I still love washington state - especially seattle. I've even been to forks and la push. when the movie came out I was kind of dissapointed but I think that's just the way it is if you read a book that you really love and then watch the movie. it's not too bad though, and robert pattinson's hot. just saying.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

okay that was a daaaamn long post. sorry about that. but I hope the book titles in caps helped a little, so you can only read about the books that interest you. like I said, I love all of them and would recommend them all (otherwise I wouldn't mention them here)!

so long!

untitled

sitting by the window
2 AM, 11th floor
the city never sleeps
no silence, no darkness
violet sky, glowing night

walking at night
23rd street, chelsea hotel
i wanna live in 1968
1973, 76, 77
we’re poets, we’re artists, we’re everything at once

lets get destroyed by madness
lets get destroyed by the city life
coffee, cigarettes, whiskey and coke
burroughs, ginsberg, kerouac, holy
jim carroll, poetry and rock’n’roll

lou reed, andy warhol, edie sedgwick
glamour, glitter, blood & dirt
love, success and desperation
hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
and that’s what we do

we’re lovers, we don’t need a home
let’s sleep in central park
benches, squirrels, mad hatter statue
you’re mad, too. and so am i
and so is the city

the most beautiful things in the world?
open windows, sound of cars rushing by at night
citylights. people. the new york night.
keep me here, city lights
i don’t wanna leave, never wanna leave

thousands of people
anonymity
rich people poor people everybody’s here
we’re all the same, in a way
aren’t we?

breathing in the new york air
glitter, pollution and freedom
and the lights, always the lights
keep me here, city lights
i don’t wanna leave, never wanna leave

just something I wrote while sitting on the windowsill in a hotel room in brooklyn, nyc.
the photo was also taken from that hotel room.

on the road - photo shoot with jackie lynn jones

these are some photos I took of my sister quite a while ago.
check out her lookbook, too, she's awesome.

all of the clothes she's wearing are thrifted except for the hat and the tights which I got from h&m and the doc martens.

hi, I'm poppy lee.

it's 2012, finally. like every year I have an interminable list of new year's resolutions, and one of them is starting a blog. ta-dah, here it is. COFFE, BOOKS & CITY LIGHTS. yeah, the title is sooo hipster, I know. but blogging itself is even more hipster, so I guess it's okay.

I'm going to write a little bit about myself first, so you can decide whether my blog is worth being read or not.
I live in hanover, germany and I'm a year 11 student. I have a passion for music, I play the guitar and the piano and sing in a band. I also write music.
my favourite bands are nirvana, foo fighters, patti smith, the kooks, arctic monkeys, the wombats, bright eyes, william fitzsimmons, bob dylan, blind melon, florence and the machine, hole, janis joplin, rolling stones, joy division, libertines, lou reed, the velvet underground, the jim carroll band, razorlight and maaany more, if I listed them all here I'd be writing for years.
I lived in england for some time, and I love traveling. some of my my favourite cities are new york city, seattle, london, liverpool, paris, berlin, glasgow and vancouver, I'd love to live in england or the usa after finishing school.
Writing is also a passion of mine, I write poems, song lyrics and short stories, and I'm planning on writing a novel, I've had the idea for almost two years now and the storyboard's finished, I just need to start writing... I won't post any of it here though because it'll be in german, maybe I'll create another blog for it, let's see. I will definitely post some of my poetry here.
I'm totally into beat poetry, I love allen ginsberg, william burroughs, jack kerouac, stuff like that. I also love the poems by patti smith, jim carroll, bertholt brecht and arthur rimbaud (I don't speak french unfortunately, so I read english translations. that's not the same as reading the originals of course, but I have a book with translations by paul schmidt and I think it's pretty good actually. I'd love to learn french though).
I love photographing and painting/drawing, anything creative actually.

enough about myself now, let's come to the blog. I'll post some of my poetry - as I said before -, photography, anything to do with art, fashion and just random things that I like. like cats. or food. or eyeballs.

with this in mind,
happy new year everybody,
I hope you enjoy my blog!
